Shaming of individuals who cannot move through white spaces
I recently listened to a podcast and they talked about code switching, which is the act of having the ability to speak and act differently in different spaces. Lucy on the podcast spoke on the act of crapping on individuals who did not have the ability to code switch. I have realized I have done this on numerous occasions. I’ve spoken to people of my own race in ways as to make them feel less because they could not navigate through whiteness. They could not speak in ways which made sense for the world which is dominated by white privilege, white beauty, and western ideology. For that I am sorry. However, I have gotten into trouble due to my inability for whites to not properly understand relationships with my family. To not understand hierarchy and family values and for that I reason I understand my act of intolerance for individuals who cannot code switch as wrong. As a person who wants to advocate for individuals who cannot move through white spaces, it is important to articulate their ideals in a manner, which whiteness can understand, while not ostrasizes their voices. It’s a learning process to relate to their struggles while not white washing it to that point where people in these communties cannot clearly and fundamentally agree with the process which is meant to help further advance their rights, goals, and values on a macro scale. The shaming of individuals who cannot move through white spaces is a deplorable offense. I hope I can hold myself responsible and become more self aware as a strive to become a advocate in the future.
